Excellent weather and snow conditions welcomed the athletes from 11 different countries in Wildhaus. Hans-Peter Schück and his team put together a very well organised race. The two days of races started with the elite and U23 categories on Saturday. The course is very challenging consisting of 6,4km running, 11,2km mountain biking and 10km cross-country skiing.
The U23 and Elite women started first followed by the men half an hour later. Sigrid Lang dominated in the early kilometres of the run followed by Stefania Bonazzi, Jutta Schubert (GER) and Marianne Vlasfeld (NED). By the end of the first discipline Lang had a 25 seconds lead in the front. Vlasfeld began the mountain-bike with a very fast lap as it was expected, she was able to catch Bonazzi and Schubert at the end of the first lap. Lang managed to keep her lead against Vlasfeld during the entire bike and she changed for cross-country ski with a clear lead of 1 minute. During the last discipline the lead did not change, Sigrid Land took the gold medal, followed by Marianne Vlasfeld and Jutta Scubert on the second and third places. The local favourite Karin Möbes from Switzerland finished fourth after a very strong bike section.
The first ever elite victory went to Slovakia in the history of Triathlon. During the first leg the young Norwegian, Arne Post was the leader, followed by Patrik Kuril and Nicolas Lebrun (FRA). Post could not manage to stay in the lead during the bike, which was taken over by Kuril on the very difficult course. He managed to break away from Lebrun. After the bike Othmar Brügger came in third to change for the cross-country ski. In the last part of the race, there were no main changes in the lead. Patrik Kuril came first followed by Lebrun and Brügger.
